Buy local, support Central New York economy Posted on Fri, November 6th, 2009 Written by: Jennifer Wing, Editor email: editor@syracuseparent.net
This holiday season, make sure to visit our local merchants. It’s so easy to forget how important our patronage to Central New York retailers is for all of us. There are many reasons why we should complete our holiday shopping list locally. ✓ Buying locally means no shipping charges. ✓You can actually see the item and hold it in your hands instead of looking at a picture online or in a catalog. If the gift recipient does not like his or her gift, it is easy to return it, and there is no need to pay return shipping. ✓ The sales tax collected on our purchases will help to counteract budget cuts and increased property taxes. ✓ Supporting local business has a snowball effect on other areas of the local economy, such as the creation of jobs and growth of the tax base. ✓There conveniences that can be gained by buying local, such as layaway, where you can have a store hold your purchases while you put money down every so often until it is paid off. ✓Many stores also have a price match offer, where if you can bring in an advertisement where an item is priced less, they will meet that price. ✓There also is usually a rain check system in place for high demand items. Fill one out, and the store will let you know when your item is in. Remember, shop local and you’re helping our state. Shop elsewhere and another community will reap the benefits.
