Montessori students create 'Wonderland'

Last month, a packed house of students and parents at the Montessori School of Syracuse enjoyed the fourth through sixth grade musical presentation of “Alice in Wonderland.” The school’s six-month Theatre Workshop provides a unique educational setting where students learn to work together as a team to create the full-theatrical production, stretching into roles that might typically be reserved for middle school drama students. These 9- to 12-year-old students memorize lines and sing solos from well-known Broadway productions.
“Our theatre workshop is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn every aspect of putting together a show,” said Patricia Choice Getz, music director. In the process of creating the student-centered production, the students designed and created sets and scenery, organized props and made costumes, memorized lines, and sang solos in addition to serving as stage crew members. Kathy Barry, Artistic Director, facilitated the process of students designing and creating the sets, costumes, and scenery as part of the students’ art classes. “Alice in Wonderland” is the 14th Theatre Workshop that Getz has directed at the Montessori School of Syracuse.
“We find that our alumni often return to see their friends in these productions,” said Head of School Mary Lawyer O’Connor. “Between first and sixth grade, students have the experience of watching or acting in such well-know shows as ‘Aladdin,’ ‘Seussical Jr.,’ ‘The Pirates of Penzance,’ ‘HMS Pinafore’ and ‘The Magic Flute’ and musicals ‘My Fair Lady,’ ‘You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,’ ‘Cats’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz.’”
The Montessori School of Syracuse is a primary and elementary school serving over 150 students, ages 3 to 12, from 20 different school districts in Central New York. For more information, call 449-9033 or visit the school’s website at mssyr.org for more information.
